SINEAD O'BRIEN A THING YOU CALL JOY

Following her intoxicating 2018 EP A List of Normal Sins and her phenomenal Speedy Wunderground-released breakthrough track 'Taking On Time', Irish wordsmith Sinead O'Brien has shared the first single via her new home Chess Club Records. Arriving alongside a sophisticated, sepia-tinged video by film maker and photographer Glashier, the driving tune is a seamless interaction between poetry and instrumentation. Leaving vital space between lines for the most important phrases to be emphasised, heavily-effected guitar work dances lucidly around O'Brien's engaging vocal delivery as pounding drums push the track forward with a thunderous sense of urgency. Lyrically discussing the highs and lows of a creative flow, 'A Thing You Call Joy' takes influence from Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus. Drawing parallels between the philosophical essay and her own situation at the time of writing, its a personal yet abstract narrative with an incredible soundtrack. -Holly Mullineaux
